Back to School Safety

With school just around the corner, you want to make sure your child is ready to tackle the new year ahead. Science projects and standardized tests are guaranteed this school year, but your child should also study up on back to school safety tips. To avoid injury, read over these five ways to ensure your child stays safe before, during and after school.

Walking to School

If your kid walks to school make sure he or she always walks on the sidewalk. If your son or daughter is 10 or younger, they need to be accompanied by an adult. Also, remind your child not to horseplay too close to the road when he or she is walking to school with friends. Your child should also always use the crosswalk when crossing the street, and remind him or her to look both ways before crossing.

Driving to School

It’s an exciting time in your teenager’s life when they finally get their driver’s license, but it’s important to remind them to always drive cautiously; especially, on their commute to school. Teens are more distracted than any other age group when driving, so remember to tell your teen not to text and drive.

Playground Safety

You shouldn’t have to worry about your child getting injured during their playtime, but according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), more than 200,000 children are sent to the emergency room each year with playground-related injuries. Prior to sending your child outside, make sure their school has a supervisor who monitors the playground at all times.

Food and Allergy Safety

The majority of schools are nut-free, but it’s still a good idea to review your child’s school rules regarding food and nut allergies prior to the first day. If your child has a food and nut allergy, you need to tell their teacher what to do in case of an allergic reaction. Also, if your child requires any medication, make sure the school has it.

Bus Stop Safety

If it’s your child’s first time riding the bus, inform them to stand back from the curb as the bus arrives, and never run to or from the bus. Also, tell them to pick a seat and remain seated the whole time, not to push, shove, or talk loudly while on the bus, and to always obey the bus driver. Your child should also always wait for the bus driver’s signal before crossing the street.

A new year of school is exciting, but you don’t want your child to get hurt on the first day back.
